Public transport: The money compensated could have been better invested.

Zminijietna – Voice of the Left considers the latest developments in the field of public transport, with the giving out of 55 million euro of public money to bus drivers/owners, as a wrong political decision that does not take into account the public good and the interest of the same bus drivers/owners It will to a certain extent create a precedent for other bus drivers/owners in Gozo because they may ask for the same treatment.
 
"We as an organisation in favour of the reform, believe that the money could have been used to have an affordable and efficient service, good working conditions, security of various routes which are not commercially viable, and the introduction of a night service.”

Zminijietna believes, that the reform as proposed by the Ministry, will not reach the ultimate objective to enable more people to make more use of the service, for many reasons such as the increase in price fare. Those who make regular use of public transport will be penalised and forced to accept advance payment schemes, instead of a reduction in price fare as an incentive.

The reform, as it has been proposed, does not take into account the reality Maltese and Gozitan families are facing. In addition the conservative mentality of the majority of employers still refrain from applying measures in favour of a work-life balance.

Zminijietna appeals to the Federation of Industry, the GRTU and the Malta Employers Association to encourage their members to introduce family-friendly measures, which ultimately will translate to less stress on workers, less work injuries, more efficiency and which will be an incentive to workers to make use of public transport to go to work. Finally this will also help to reduce traffic congestion and improve our air quality.

Zminijietna - Lehen ix-Xellug thares lejn l-ahhar zviluppi li sehhew dan l-ahhar fil-qasam ta' trasport pubbliku bl-ghoti ta' 55miljun ewro lix-xufiera, bhala politika f’direzzjoni zbaljata u li ma' tharisx il-gid komuni u lanqas l-interess ta' l-istess xufiera. Pjuttost ser tohloq precedent iehor biex issa x-xufiera ghawdxin jinghataw l-istess trattament.

"Bhala ghaqda favur ir-riforma nemmnu li l-flus moghtija setghu ntuzaw sabiex ir-riforma twassal ghal servizz irhas, efficjenti, b’garanzija ta’ xoghol u titjieb fil-kundizzjonijiet tal-haddiema, garanzija ta' rotot li mhumiex vijabbli kummercjalment, kif ukoll l-introduzzjoni tas-servizz ta’ bil-lejl."

Zminijietna temmen b'dispjacir li riforma kif proposta mill-Ministeru mhiex ser tilhaq l-ghanijiet taghha, dik li aktar nies jaghmlu uzu mis-servizz minhabba hafna ragunijiet, fosthom li l-prezz ta' noll ser jerga joghla, filwaqt li dawk li jaghmlu uzu regolari mit-trasport pubbliku ser jkunu penalizzati u sfurzati jiehdu l-skema ta' hlas bil-quddiem, minflok ma' rahhasna noll sabiex iservi ta’ incentiv.

Zminijietna tappella il-Federazzjoni ta' l-Industrija, il-GRTU u l-Assocjazzjoni ta' min ihaddem sabiex jheggu l-membri taghhom jimplimentaw mizuri favur bilanc bejn il-familja u xoghol. li Dawn il-mizuri jghinu sabiex jitnaqqas l-istress fuq il-haddiema, anqas korrimenti fuq il-postijiet tax-xoghol, aktar produzzjoni, u incentiv sabiex l-istess haddiema jaghmlu uzu mit-trasport pubbliku biex jmorru ghax-xoghol u lura. Igifieri min ihaddem jilghab parti mportanti fir-riforma ta’ transport pubbliku.
