Zminijietna - Voice of the Left is actively involved in an International campaign against the producing of biofuels and to abolish the idea of the European Commission to set a target of 10% of transport fuels to come from biofuels by 2010. Participate in this campaign by sending (copy and paste) the letter below via email to the Maltese members of European Parliament. Emails of Maltese members of European Parliament:
“ Please put pressure in the European Parliament to abolish the idea, of the European Commission proposal, to set a target of 10 percent of transport fuels to come from Bio-fuels by 2010 as part of the plans to increase the use of renewable energy in Europe. I urgently request you to "take a strong position" against expanding the use of biofuels in the EU because the demand for palm oil is fuelling human rights abuses in Indonesia. The increasing demands for palm oil as a biofuel was helping spur on the conversion of millions of hectares of forests into plantations, which destroys the livelihoods of indigenous peoples as well as the environment. FoE biofuel campaigner Hannah Griffiths stated "that biofuel as well as being bad for the environment, is a disaster for people." I advice you as an MEP to listen to the evidence on bio fuel and use the forthcoming debate on this in the European Parliament to reject the 10 per cent target. Instead of introducing targets for more biofuels, I believe that the EU should insist that all new cars are designed to be super-efficient and that public transport be more accessible, efficient and cheaper to use.
